China criticized the United States on Monday for sending six Chinese Uighur detainees from the American military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to the Pacific island nation of Palau. China has demanded that the Uighurs be returned to China, but the United States has refused because it says they would face persecution there. [*]A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ma Zhaoxu, said that the six belonged to a terrorist group listed by the United Nations, and that the United States had a duty to “abide by U.N. resolutions and fulfill its international antiterror obligations.”
