Given that 27 civilian staff members have been killed this year, including five in Kabul this week, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the United Nations General Assembly on Friday that he needed $50 [*] million more to better protect facilities and guesthouses worldwide, and $25 million for a more robust emergency security fund. [if I’m UN worker in region I’m wondering what the hell has taken Ban Ki-moon so long?] [*] “The United Nations, increasingly, has become a target, all too soft a target,” he said. Mr. Ban also questioned why it took Afghan and NATO forces more than an hour to respond to the attack Wednesday in Kabul, noting that he was exploring hiring private guards.
