Georgia: 2 Killed in South Ossetia

A firefight between Georgian troops and soldiers from the separatist province of South Ossetia left two people dead and at least 11 wounded, [***] a spokeswoman for the separatist government said. Each side blamed the other for inciting the encounter, which occurred a day after reports that an explosion killed a police chief in South Ossetia. Georgian officials also said Thursday that Dmitry Sanakoyev, whom Georgia considers the legitimate leader of South Ossetia, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
