Georgia: Troops Take Area of Defiant Militia
By C. J. CHIVERS [Chechnya] [Russia] [former ussr] [use psci 469] [*********]
Georgia said its special police forces had taken control of the remote Kodori Gorge, but were searching for a militia leader who had eluded capture. [*****] Government troops had intermittently clashed for two days with a paramilitary militia, known as the Hunter Battalion, whose leader, Emzar Kvitsiani, had said he would not recognize federal rule. The fighting, in the mountains along the Russian border and beside the breakaway region of Abkhazia, [*****]raised concerns of a wider conflict. A full accounting of the casualties has not been released, but at least one civilian, a woman, died in the clashes. The government put a bounty on information leading to Mr. Kvitsiani’s capture.
